If the words ‘volunteering’, ‘environmental protection’, ‘good governance’ and ‘ethical behaviour’ spring to mind when someone mentions Corporate Social Responsibility, then you would be 100% correct. Corporate Social Responsibility, also referred to as CSR, is most commonly understood to be a business model adopted by companies allowing them to focus on benefiting society and in return helping them maintain a positive image.
CSR is usually adopted by Companies that have built themselves up financially to be able to venture into the world of maintaining balance between themselves and the community that they operate in. This balance can be achieved through many forms, the most popular being volunteer work, making a concerted effort to be more environmentally friendly, making financial contributions to charitable events/organizations and having ethical labour practices. Recent trends show that employees place high value in being hired by a company that prioritizes CSR. Likewise, consumers are leaning toward spending their hard-earned money with businesses whom they deem to be socially responsible. As the world moves towards becoming more socially conscious, it would then make sense for companies to adopt CSR.
At Torch we recognize the importance of giving back to the community. We pride ourselves in being a small company with a big heart, not just with our daily interactions with each other and our customers but with our CSR program. We have identified an amazing Non-Profit Organization that we have teamed up with – Miracle Mission.
Miracle Mission was founded in 1999 by Glynis Sack. Their main focus is to take in abandoned and orphaned babies and babies who have been given up for adoption. Elizabeth Sack has described the work they do as giving each baby a fair start to life by providing them with a place of safety as well as all the love, care and support each baby needs when born. The home takes care of these children until they are adopted into their new families. There are currently 12 babies in their care aged between 4 months and 2 years old. Some of these children are brought into Miracle Mission in dire need of medical attention, which makes their task no easy feat. The home also fosters 4 teenagers aged between 14 and 19 years old, who have been with the home since birth.
When asked if Torch’s support has made any kind of impact with the help we have offered, Miracle Mission responded with the following: “Torch’s support of two of our teenage children has provided the children and ourselves with the confidence in knowing that their educational and extra-curricular activities are provided for. Each year their uniform, stationary and textbook requirements have been covered by Torch. Throughout the year their extra lessons have proved invaluable and so very helpful in providing the academic support they have needed. Torch has also enabled one of the children to continue with his love and passion of playing soccer with his team. We count ourselves privileged to have been awarded this kind of support for two of our children by Torch and convey our sincere thanks and gratitude”

If you are working at a company or are a company that has not yet adopted CSR, now would be a good time to start. Apart from doing your fair share for society, there is nothing quite like the feeling of knowing that you are doing your bit to make a difference and that your small act of kindness through public service can have life changing ripple effects.
In the words of at least a thousand inspirational quotes floating around on the internet but is nevertheless still as important as it is true (and I am hoping it appeals to your non desensitized side) – Helping one person may not change the world, but it could change the world for one person.
